The next generation wireless networks (5G) will need to provide an unprecedented level of flexibility to accommodate in the same network a wide set of different application scenarios, such as broadband and media everywhere, smart vehicles and transport, smart grid, smart industry, human machine interface, massive wireless sensor networks. To support this, the network will have to reach flexibility and intelligence, spectrum regulation will need to be rethought and improved, and energy and cost efficiencies will become even more critical considerations. In particular, the stringent requirements defined for 5G systems drive the need to promote new paradigms to the existing cellular networks. Dense and ultra-dense networks (UDN) based on small cells, together with new spectrum sharing schemes seem to be key enabling technologies for emerging 5G mobile networks.

The aim of this course is to illustrate and discuss the most important techniques for resource allocation for multi-carrier massive multiple-input multiple-output communications for 5G cellular networks. The fundamental formulations of the vast majority of resource allocation problems encountered in this setup belong to the class of mixed-integer non-linear and non-convex programs (MINLPs), which are hard to solve even for small-scale setups. A common strategy for dealing with such problems is to look for opportunities for linearization reformulation. The students attending this course will learn the basics of resource allocation for this environment. To achieve this objective they will encounter several optimization problems and will master different tools and algorithms for their solution.
