Brief abstract with motivations and goals of the course:
The aim of the course is to provide doctoral students with the skills necessary for writing and review research project. The course will examine the main types of research projects, both with reference to national competitive calls (e.g., PRIN, MUR) and European projects (HORIZON EUROPE, Marie Curie, etc.). The course will include hands-on sessions.
In the second part of the course, students will learn of how to pick the right journal or the right conference. They are introduced to the different factors that determine journal/conference choice (such as journal rankings, quartile, core, acceptance rate, review time). Finally, the course focus on the afterlife of the research paper. Students are introduced to the broader academic context and to different approaches to research assessment. In particular, we will discuss both the traditional citation-based evaluation system (including the H-Index, citation tracking, and key databases) and the new approach promoted by the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment, launched by CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment) and endorsed by many universities, including the University of Siena. This comparison will help students understand the ongoing shift toward more qualitative, transparent, and responsible research evaluation practices.
Syllabus:
10h
Learning goals
Doctoral students will be able to properly draft different research projects using for each one the most adequate techniques and styles. Through the methodological tools acquired in class, they will develop autonomy in evaluating and judging the best drafting techniques for each type of research project.
Intended learning outcomes
Critical reading and analysis of texts and topics covered in the module will enable doctoral students to acquire learning autonomy. Doctoral students at the end of the module will know how to acquire new abilities and techniques for the drafting of their research projects.
